Cyberpunk 2077 (CD Projekt Red, 2020/updated 2022) is an open-world action RPG set in Night City, a dystopian future megalopolis. Despite a troubled launch, it became a massive seller and is now considered an excellent game. Its content is among the most extreme of any mainstream release.
Cyberpunk 2077's content is among the most extreme of any mainstream game. The character creator includes full genital customization. The game world is saturated with nudity and sexual content — billboards, NPCs, and environments. Explicit sexual scenes are available through gameplay choices. Drug use — stimulants, hallucinogens — is a core gameplay mechanic presented as neutral tool use. Violence includes graphic dismemberment. The entire aesthetic is built on the sexualization of the human body through technological modification.
Beyond the immediate content, Cyberpunk 2077 presents a coherent transhumanist worldview — the idea that human identity is infinitely malleable through technological modification, that the body is hardware to be upgraded, and that traditional concepts of personhood are obsolete. Characters modify their bodies extensively, change their appearance entirely, and "chrome up" to become more machine than human. This is a genuinely anti-Christian anthropology (Genesis 1:27, the imago dei) normalized as the game's fundamental reality.
Cyberpunk 2077 is a technically impressive game with genuinely interesting storytelling in places. None of that redeems the content for Christian players. 15/100 Avoid.
