GodlyScore rates any piece of media or public figure on a 1-100 scale using nine biblical signals. The algorithm is intentionally transparent — we publish the scoring weights so Christians can understand and challenge our assessments.

The Nine Signals

Violence Level
How graphic and sustained is the violence?

Special Rules

Jesus-Centered override (score = 100): Content explicitly and primarily about Jesus, the Gospel, or Christian discipleship — The Chosen, Jesus Revolution, worship music — scores 100 regardless of other signals.

80-cap rule: No content can score above 80 unless the creator personally identifies as Christian in a documented, consistent way. A well-made secular film with strong virtue themes tops out at 80.

Cautionary reflection discount: Content that shows sin honestly to warn rather than celebrate it — documentaries, social realism, cautionary dramas — receives a 40% reduction in its behavioral penalty bucket. Survivor (38/100) scores higher than Love Island (1/100) because Survivor documents human nature; Love Island celebrates sexual immorality.

Kids + LGBT penalty: Any content primarily targeting children that includes LGBT references scores in the 10-25 range regardless of other signals. This reflects the heightened concern Christians have for content marketed to children.

The Badge System

Christ-Centered
90-100
Explicitly about Jesus, the Gospel, or Christian discipleship. The Chosen (96), biblical films.
Spiritually Safe
70-89
Strong positive signals, minimal concerns. Appropriate for Christian families with minimal caveats.
Mixed
50-69
Content concerns present but offset by virtue or redemptive themes. Adult discernment appropriate.
Caution
30-49
Significant concerns. Not appropriate for children; adults should engage critically and selectively.
Avoid
1-29
Content that consistently glorifies sin, features heavy sexual content, or undermines Christian values.

AI Scoring — How It Works

When you type a title into GodlyScore that is not yet in our database, our AI scores it in real time. The AI is given the nine signal definitions, specific scoring guidance for different content categories (reality TV, horror, celebrity faith, etc.), and instructed to provide specific evidence for each signal — naming actual scenes, songs, statements, and documented events — not vague generalizations.

Scores are cached after the first generation — if 1,000 people score Euphoria, they all get the same result. Our editorial team reviews cached scores periodically and can override AI assessments when the evidence warrants it. Browse pre-reviewed guides →

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the GodlyScore algorithm?
GodlyScore uses nine biblical signals — violence, sexualization, profanity, spiritual darkness, LGBT content, deception, glorification of sin, virtue strength, and redemption arc — weighted and combined into a 1-100 score. Special rules handle Jesus-centered content (score=100), the 80-cap for secular content, cautionary reflection discounts, and kids content with LGBT themes.
Who decides the scores?
Pre-reviewed guides are assessed by the GodlyScore editorial team using the nine-signal framework. AI-generated scores are produced by Claude (Anthropic) with detailed scoring instructions and reviewed periodically. Both humans and AI use the same transparent algorithm.
Can I challenge a score?
Yes — if you believe a score is inaccurate, use the thumbs-down feedback mechanism on any scored result to flag it for editorial review. We take accuracy seriously and update scores when new evidence is presented.
What theology informs GodlyScore?
GodlyScore uses an evangelical Protestant biblical framework — sola scriptura, the inerrancy of Scripture, and traditional Christian ethics on sexuality, violence, and spiritual darkness. Catholic, Orthodox, and LDS users will find significant overlap with some differences. We are transparent about our framework rather than claiming neutral objectivity.
