Elemental (Pixar, 2023) is the animated film set in Element City, where anthropomorphic Fire, Water, Earth, and Air beings live together in an immigrant-shaped world. It follows Ember Lumen, a Fire person who has spent her life preparing to take over her immigrant parents' shop, as she unexpectedly falls in love with Wade, a Water person. It is Pixar's most explicitly immigration-themed film and a personal tribute from director Peter Sohn to his Korean immigrant parents.
Elemental is transparently about the immigrant experience — Ember's father Bernie left the Fire Land to build a new life in Element City, faced discrimination and hardship, and built a family shop that became the center of the Fire immigrant community. His sacrifice and his hope that Ember will carry on his legacy is the film's emotional core.
This is a moving portrait of immigrant sacrifice and the weight parents' dreams place on first-generation children. Leviticus 19:34's instruction to love the foreigner "as yourself" describes the posture Elemental invites viewers into. Christian families who want to help children understand the immigrant experience with empathy will find Elemental genuinely valuable.
Elemental's central romance between Fire and Water is explicitly framed as an interracial relationship metaphor. The film does not shy away from this. From a Christian perspective, the interracial relationship parallel raises no concern — the Bible is clear that there is no distinction between peoples in Christ (Galatians 3:28). The romance is handled with age-appropriate restraint — no sexual content, no inappropriate physical contact. It is a love story in the classic animated sense.
