For All Mankind (Apple TV+, 2019-present) is an alternate history drama imagining a world where the Soviet Union landed on the moon first, driving the space race to continue into the present day. Created by Ronald D. Moore, it is one of Apple TV+'s most acclaimed series.
For All Mankind is genuinely excellent science fiction that takes its premise seriously. The space hardware, mission planning, and historical reimagining are treated with real attention to detail. The show creates genuine stakes by being willing to kill major characters and alter its timeline in meaningful ways. Season 1 in particular is some of the best prestige television of recent years.
For All Mankind carries significant content baggage. Sexual content is present throughout — multiple explicit scenes. Profanity is pervasive. The show's alternate timeline serves partly as a vehicle for progressive social ideology: its alternate history is specifically designed so that women, gay characters, and minorities achieve space milestones earlier than in our timeline, which the show presents as unambiguously superior. Same-sex relationships are featured prominently in later seasons.
For All Mankind is a well-made show that rewards discerning adult viewers who can engage its content critically. The sexual content, profanity, and LGBT normalization make it inappropriate for regular family viewing. Discerning adult Christians who can separate the excellent storytelling from the ideological framing may find it worthwhile, but it requires active discernment.
