Jehovah's Witnesses is a religious organization founded in the 1870s by Charles Taze Russell and now headquartered in Warwick, New York. Despite using Christian language and the Bible, Jehovah's Witnesses hold doctrines that place them outside the bounds of orthodox Christianity — most critically, the denial that Jesus Christ is God.
The most fundamental problem with Jehovah's Witnesses doctrine is their teaching about Jesus Christ. JW theology holds that Jesus is "a god" — a created being, the first and greatest of Jehovah's creations — but not God himself. They support this from their New World Translation, which renders John 1:1 as "the Word was a god" rather than the standard "the Word was God."
This is not a translation disagreement — it is a theological one. The original Greek of John 1:1 does not support the JW rendering. Every major Bible translation, including those made by non-Christians, renders John 1:1 as "the Word was God." The New World Translation was produced specifically to support JW theology, not derived from standard scholarship.
Why does this matter? Because if Jesus is not God, then his death cannot atone for human sin. Hebrews 9:14 — the blood of Christ's atonement is efficacious because Christ is eternal God. A created being cannot bear the infinite penalty of sin against an infinite God. The JW doctrine of Jesus removes the foundation of Christian salvation.
JWs also deny the Trinity (the biblical teaching that one God exists in three persons — Father, Son, Holy Spirit), teach that only 144,000 will go to heaven (a doctrine contradicted by Revelation's broader description of heaven's population), forbid blood transfusions (a position that has resulted in preventable deaths including of children), and prohibit celebration of Christmas, birthdays, and other cultural practices they deem pagan.
The organization also exercises high control over members — JWs who leave or are disfellowshipped are shunned by family members who remain. This high-control religious structure is documented extensively and has caused significant documented psychological harm. See Jehovah's Witnesses overview.
When Jehovah's Witnesses knock on your door, the most important question to ask is: "Do you believe Jesus is God?" The answer will reveal immediately where the theological difference lies. The best response is to open John 1:1 in any standard Bible and to ask them to explain the difference between their New World Translation and every other translation in existence.
