One of the most important Christian hip-hop artists of the past two decades. Recent work reflects complex faith journey. 78/100 Spiritually Safe.
Lecrae Moore has done more than any other artist to establish Christian hip-hop as a legitimate artistic category. His albums Rehab (2010), Gravity (2012, Grammy Award for Best Gospel Album), and Anomaly (2014) brought theologically serious, artistically credible Christian rap to mainstream attention. He founded Reach Records, which signed and developed KB, Andy Mineo, Trip Lee, and others — building an entire ecosystem of Christian hip-hop.
Lecrae's more recent work has generated controversy in evangelical circles. He has spoken extensively about experiences of racial injustice and moved away from some evangelical communities he previously occupied. He has spoken about nearly losing his faith during a period of deconstruction. He remains a Christian and his recent work reflects genuine faith, but the theological directness of his early work has given way to something more complex. For consistently explicit Christ-centered hip-hop, Trip Lee and KB have maintained more consistent theological clarity.
Lecrae's label: Reach Records.
Evaluating whether a celebrity is a Christian requires distinguishing between: cultural Christianity (grew up in church), nominal Christianity (identifies as Christian without active faith), and genuine Christianity (personal faith in Jesus Christ evidenced consistently over time). GodlyScore applies a consistent standard: documented public evidence. "The LORD looks at the heart" (1 Samuel 16:7). Score: 78/100 Spiritually Safe.
See our Christian Celebrities hub for other public figures assessed with the same standard. The Gospel Coalition provides additional cultural context.
