What the Bible Actually Prohibits

The Bible's commands against lying address sincere deception in real relationships. Proverbs 12:22 — "The Lord detests lying lips, but he delights in people who are trustworthy." Colossians 3:9 — "Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices." These passages describe misrepresenting reality to real people in real situations — the kind of deception that damages trust, exploits vulnerability, and contradicts the character of God who is truth (John 14:6).

Sincere vs. Performative Assertions

Christian philosophers and theologians distinguish between sincere assertions (genuine first-person claims about reality) and performative assertions (statements understood by all parties as fiction within an agreed context). No one accuses an actor of lying when they play a character. No one accuses a novelist of lying when they write fiction. No one accuses a poker player of lying when they bluff — all players know bluffing is part of the game.

Among Us works because every player consensually enters a fictional game world with agreed-upon rules. When the Impostor says "I'm a Crewmate," every player knows this claim might be false — it's part of the game everyone chose to play. This is a performative assertion, not a sincere one. John Piper addresses this exact distinction in his writing on truth-telling.

The Character Question

Even though game deception isn't sinful, how you play still matters. Christians should play Among Us with good sportsmanship, not mockery of other players, age-appropriate time limits (the game requires some complex social reasoning — better for ages 10+), and keeping it in appropriate perspective.
