Detailed Review

What the Show Is

American Dad! follows Stan Smith, a hyper-patriotic CIA agent, his family, and Roger, a chaotic alien who lives in their attic under an ever-changing series of disguises and personas. Like its sister show Family Guy, it uses absurdist, cutaway-heavy comedy to satirize American politics, culture, and family dynamics.

The Content Problem

Later seasons in particular carry frequent uncensored strong profanity (including "fuck" and "shit," uncensored in streaming/DVD releases), along with "bitch," "whore," "dick," and occasional slurs. Sexual humor is a constant presence — lewd references to body parts and sex acts run through nearly every episode. Drug references are unusually extensive for a mainstream animated comedy: episodes and jokes reference heroin, methamphetamine, cocaine, crack, LSD, and other hard drugs, generally played for shock or comedy rather than depicted with real consequence. Violence is frequent but cartoonish and not typically graphic.

Content Breakdown

Language: Frequent strong profanity, especially in later seasons. Sexual content: Frequent crude sexual humor and innuendo throughout. Drugs: Unusually extensive references to hard drugs. Violence: Frequent cartoon violence, generally not graphic. Positive themes: Occasional family-loyalty moments, but these are inconsistent and undercut by the show's overall crude, mocking tone.

Our Verdict

American Dad! scores 22/100 — Avoid. Unlike shows that pair mature content with genuine emotional depth or moral seriousness, American Dad!'s satire is built primarily around shock value and crude humor for its own sake, with little sustained redemptive counterweight. Ephesians 5:4 cautions against "obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking" — a fair description of the show's default comedic mode.
