Why the most popular kids review site has a secular bias — and what to use instead.
Common Sense Media was founded in 2003 with a genuinely useful mission: help parents understand what is in the media their children consume. For many years it delivered on this — providing age ratings and content breakdowns that millions of families found valuable. But its secular worldview has increasingly shaped how it frames content, and for Christians, the gap has become significant.
The most documented example: Common Sense Media described the lesbian kiss in Disney's Lightyear as "a milestone for Disney-Pixar" — framing content that many Christian parents consider a concern as a positive. When parents left negative reviews of Barbie (2023), those reviews were deleted while positive ones remained. This is not neutral content analysis; it is ideological curation.
CSM's funding base includes the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, the Gates Foundation, Craig Newmark Philanthropies, and the Oak Foundation — all left-of-center organizations with documented commitments to progressive social causes. This does not automatically make their reviews wrong, but it means their editorial framework will not align with a biblical worldview on sexuality, gender, or spiritual content.
