Is the Bible reliable? This is one of the most important questions any Christian or seeker can ask. The answer matters enormously — if the Bible is not reliable, Christianity is built on sand. If it is reliable, it deserves the weight Christians give it. Here is the evidence.
The New Testament is supported by over 5,800 Greek manuscripts — far more than any other ancient text. Homer's Iliad, the next most attested ancient document, has about 1,800 manuscripts. Caesar's Gallic Wars has 10. No serious historian doubts the textual transmission of Caesar or Homer; the New Testament has exponentially stronger manuscript support. The time gap between the originals and earliest copies is also remarkably short — some New Testament manuscripts date to within 50 years of the original writings.
Archaeology has consistently confirmed the historical details of Scripture. The Pool of Bethesda (John 5:2) was considered legendary until excavated in the 19th century. The Pilate Stone confirmed Pontius Pilate's existence and title. Tel Dan Stele references "the House of David," confirming the biblical dynasty. Hezekiah's Tunnel matches the biblical description in 2 Kings 20:20 exactly. Critics who predicted archaeology would disprove Scripture have repeatedly been proven wrong. The Old Testament contains hundreds of prophecies fulfilled in the New Testament — many written centuries before their fulfillment. Isaiah 53, written approximately 700 years before Christ, describes the Suffering Servant in detail that matches Jesus's crucifixion with extraordinary precision. Micah 5:2 names Bethlehem as the birthplace of the Messiah centuries before Jesus's birth. The mathematical probability of fulfilling even eight of the major messianic prophecies by chance is astronomically small.
Claiming the Bible is reliable does not mean every passage is meant to be read literally (poetry, apocalyptic literature, and history use different conventions), that there are no difficult passages (there are), or that all scholarly questions are resolved (they are not). It means the documents we have accurately represent what was written, that the historical claims are trustworthy, and that the theological content can be trusted as God's revelation.
