What does the Bible say about drugs? The Bible doesn't mention marijuana or cocaine by name but establishes principles that address the question clearly.
The body as temple: 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 — "Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies." The body belongs to God. Sobriety is commanded: 1 Peter 5:8 — "Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion." 1 Thessalonians 5:6 — "Keep awake and be sober." Ephesians 5:18 — "Do not get drunk with wine... but be filled with the Spirit." The consistent pattern: God-filled living requires a clear mind. Self-control is a fruit of the Spirit: Galatians 5:22-23. Recreational drug use producing loss of control directly contradicts the Spirit's fruit.
Recreational intoxication: Using drugs to impair judgment and lose self-control conflicts with the biblical picture of the Spirit-filled life. This applies to marijuana for recreational intoxication, alcohol for drunkenness, and any drug producing altered consciousness for recreational purposes. Medical use: Prescription medications for pain management, mental health, and other conditions are not addressed by warnings against intoxication. Christians can use prescribed medications without guilt. Marijuana specifically: The key distinction — recreational intoxication (getting high) falls under sobriety commands; pain relief with minimal intoxication is medical use. Intent and effect matter regardless of legal status.
